Being AIT a company specialized in machinery for the food industry and more specifically broccoli, cauliflower, iceberg and cabbage, we were surprised by the visit of some residents of the Basque Country with a project proposition. They have been developing a machine to clean the squids for years. They have made progress but without being able to build a stable and sufficiently effective machine. It really differs of the projects that we are dealing with on a regular basis. There are some matching points such as hygienic design since we are in the food industry, as well as dealing with live products and therefore with different morphologies and unit sizes.
The project is attractive to us and awakens in us our innovative and challenging spirit and we reached an agreement with them for the development of an industrial solution. As it is a high-risk project, we raised it to the Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) to obtain financing and we set out to solve the challenge. For this, we explored the solutions proposed by our new partners and contributed our new ideas and solutions. We also carried out fieldwork with potential clients in order to redefine the final objectives that the sector needs. This activity led us to redefine the project requirements and really helped in identifying and targeting the true needs of potential clients.
After 2 years of hard work designing and experimenting, we were able to conclude with a stable functional solution and reached an agreement with a client for its real field test that allowed us to test its efficiency and behavior. The results were in line with expectations, although there were several points for improvement that we addressed immediately. The prototype was tested again being validated by the client and our technical team, becoming the first machine in the world for the automatic cleaning of squid.
After its validation, we are in the commercialization phase, having already achieved the implementation of our machine in several clients in Spain.
