How has Ait helped its clients to reduce water consumption in vegetable processing and washing?

It is widely known that water resources and their conservation are of utmost importance, both in terms of responsibility, environmental sustainability, and ensuring availability for other purposes, as well as from an economic standpoint. Because of that, we have worked closely with our clients to develop solutions that require the minimal possible water usage.

In our new range of “Splash” Washers, we incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as:

  • Helical water flow to maximize the retention of the product being washed in the smallest possible space.
  • Continuous filtration, both rotary and static. We have implemented parallel ultrafine filters with a clearance of 0.105 mm. These systems clean the water used in the washing process, reducing the need for water replacement in the system.

How does the 0.105 mm filtration help reduce water consumption?

Usually, continuous filtration in industrial vegetable washers is performed using various filters with a clearance of 0.75 mm, which is sufficient for most particles and insects found in vegetables, such as aphids, small beetles (like the spider beetle), or woodworms, generally ranging in size from 1 to 3 mm. However, there are smaller elements like mites, which can measure up to 0.3 mm.

In the case of continuous washing production where large quantities are processed, a closed system with water recirculation and 0.75 mm filtration is not sufficient. After a few hours, the concentration of smaller elements can increase, requiring water replacement or resulting in suboptimal product washing.

On the other hand, ultrafine filtration at 0.105 mm reduces the need for product rinsing, removes more impurities, and maintains water quality for a longer period, resulting in water savings.

Additionally, performing such fine filtration reduces maintenance tasks as there are fewer solid particles in the pipes, leading to reduced requirements for continuous cleaning and pipe obstructions.

In addition to these implemented improvements for clients with high demands and consciousness regarding efficient water usage, Ait has the capacity and suitable partners to provide solutions for your specific washing needs.
